In-House vs. Outsourced IT, Honestly Compared
Hire a team, outsource to a partner, or blend the two? Each has a real case. Here’s the honest trade-off — including the co-managed middle ground most growing businesses actually land on.
Three models, side by side
Most businesses move along this spectrum as they grow:
| In-House | Outsourced (MSP) | Co-Managed | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost model | Salaries + benefits + tools | Flat per-user fee | Smaller team + partner fee |
| 24/7 coverage | — Hard for one person | ✓ | ✓ |
| Security depth (SOC/MDR) | — Rare in-house | Varies by provider — ours is on Secure IT | Varies by provider — ours is on Secure IT |
| Institutional knowledge | ✓ High | Built over time | ✓ Kept in-house |
| Single point of failure | High — one person | Low | Low |
| Specialist skills on tap | Limited to who you hired | ✓ Whole team | ✓ Whole team |
| Best for | Large orgs (~100+ staff) | SMBs without internal IT | Teams with 1–2 IT staff who need depth |
The middle column is where most of our clients live — and the right column is where many growing ones do. See how co-managed works → Managed vs. break-fix →
You don’t have to choose all-or-nothing
The framing of “hire vs. outsource” misses the option most growing businesses actually want: keep the internal person who knows your business, and give them a team behind them. Co-Managed IT means your staffer keeps the relationships and the context, while we supply the 24/7 monitoring, the security operations center, the after-hours coverage, and the specialist skills no single hire can cover. They stop being a single point of failure — and stop burning out.
Keep your person
They retain the institutional knowledge and the internal relationships — the things that are genuinely hard to outsource.
Add the coverage
24/7 monitoring, a SOC, after-hours response, and vacation cover — the parts one person structurally can’t provide.
Add the depth
Cloud, security, and compliance specialists on tap for the projects and threats that exceed any generalist’s reach.
FAQ
Can we keep our internal IT person and still use you?
Yes — that's co-managed IT, and it's often the best answer. Your internal person keeps the relationships and institutional knowledge; we add 24/7 monitoring, a security operations center, after-hours coverage, and specialist depth they can't provide alone. They stop being a single point of failure.
Isn't hiring our own IT team cheaper long-term?
Sometimes, at sufficient scale. But one hire can't cover 24/7, can't be a helpdesk and a security analyst and a cloud engineer at once, and takes vacations and sick days. Below roughly 75–100 people, a full internal team is usually more expensive and less resilient than an MSP or a co-managed model.
What happens when our one IT person leaves?
With a purely internal setup, that's a crisis — knowledge and access walk out the door. With an outsourced or co-managed model, coverage is continuous and documented, so a departure is an inconvenience, not an emergency.
